What Are The Basic Processes in Sheet Metal Fabrication?

Sheet metal fabrication involves cutting, bending, and forming various sheet materials using machine tools. It is commonly used in automotive parts manufacturing, electronic equipment, industrial, and medical devices.

So, what is the general process for sheet metal fabrication?

A- Based on customer requirements and drawings, sheet metal fabricators design the sheet metal parts to meet the drawing requirements, including size, shape, and structure.

B- Sheet metal material preparation. Based on the design requirements from the previous stage, appropriate sheet metal materials are selected and various processing operations such as cutting, bending, and punching are performed promptly.

C- Processing. Based on the drawing requirements, sheet metal fabrication machinery is used to perform various processing operations on the sheet metal, such as welding and stamping.

D- Surface treatment. After various processing steps are completed on each sheet metal part, surface treatments such as painting, electroplating, polishing, and oxidation are performed.

E- Workpiece assembly. At this stage, the processed sheet metal parts are assembled into a finished product that meets the complete drawing requirements.

F- Sheet metal inspection. Quality inspectors will conduct rigorous quality inspections on finished sheet metal products according to the drawings to ensure they meet design requirements and quality standards.

G-Workpiece Packaging. Qualified bows and arrows will be packaged to protect them from damage during long-distance transportation and ultimately delivered to customers with guaranteed quality and quantity.

Among the various sheet metal processing processes, the main steps include blanking, shearing, punching, bending, riveting, splicing, and forming.

1-Blanking refers to cutting the workpiece from the raw material into the desired length or size. The main functions of blanking are:

Saving raw materials: Without blanking, the raw material to be processed will become excessively long, resulting in waste.

Reducing Processing Difficulty: Overly long workpieces can cause lathe instability and affect machining accuracy. Blanking reduces processing difficulty and ensures quality.

Improving Processing Efficiency: Blanking improves processing efficiency, avoids repeated processing, and saves processing time.

Blanking methods include punching, digital punching, shearing, laser cutting, and segmentation. Punching and laser cutting are the primary methods for cutting sheet metal.

2. Sheet metal shearing, also known as cutting material, involves using a shearing machine to cut appropriately sized pieces from larger sheets, based on the client's drawings. This simplifies subsequent processing. Due to the varying number of products being processed, when the quantity is large, each cut must be marked with a serial number to avoid confusion.

3. Sheet metal blanking is a stamping process that uses a die to separate a portion of material or workpiece from another portion or scrap. Blanking is a general term for a number of separation processes, including shearing, blanking, punching, notching, notching, slitting, chiseling, and trimming.

4. Sheet metal bending. Bending is a process that changes the angle of a sheet or sheet metal. It primarily involves bending flat metal sheets into various shapes, such as V-shaped, U-shaped, or channel-shaped.
